President Donald Trump, meanwhile, retweeted several tweets and media reports that seemed to offer confirmation the January 25 strike killed top al-Qaida leader Qassim al-Rimi.

The New York Times reported that three current or former American officials expressed confidence that Rimi had been killed in a January airstrike in Yemen.

The Pentagon has not elaborated on the situation.

Al-Rimi had threatened to attack American targets, and the USA government had offered $10 million in reward for information about him.

The CIA declined to comment.

Many observers have considered AQAP among the most unsafe, if not the most risky, branch of al-Qaeda since its formation in 2009.

In 2006, Rimi and other AQAP members escaped from prison in Yemen to establish what the USA considered to be one of al-Qaida's most vigorous local branches, orchestrating attacks on pipelines carrying oil and gas to terminals in the south of the country.

Al-Rimi succeeded Nasser al-Wahishi, who was killed in a USA drone strike in 2015, as the top leader of AQAP.

The authorities said firefighters received a call at 9.47am about the crash, which caused a brush fire on a hillside. However, investigators have indicated that they will be studying the weather and aircraft conditions, specifically.

The CIA learned of al-Rimi's location from an informant in Yemen in November, according to the Times, and began tracking him through aerial surveillance and other means.

Authorities reportedly said they'll continue to assess whether al-Rimi was killed in the strike by monitoring social media and messaging apps for evidence.

The CIA believes he was involved in the 2008 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Sana that killed 10 guards and four civilians.

Trump re-tweeted a Yahoo News report confirming a drone strike by the United States that killed one of America's most wanted terrorists.

In January a year ago, a U.S. strike killed Jamal al-Badawi, an al-Qaida operative linked to the 2000 attack on the USS Cole while it was being refuelled in Aden.

The United States has sought to prevent al-Qaeda from exploiting the chaos of Yemen's civil war to establish a safe haven, but the number of USA military strikes has declined sharply over the last few years. This week, Mike Pompeo, the secretary of state, said the U.S. was "alarmed" by a recent increase in violence in Yemen.

The U.S. military carried out 131 airstrikes in Yemen in 2017 and conducted 36 strikes in 2018, almost all of them targeting al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

Tribal leaders said Saturday a suspected US drone strike destroyed a building housing al-Qaida militants last week in eastern Yemen.
