On Tuesday, Trump complained on Twitter about the seven-to-nine-year sentence prosecutors recommended for Stone, who was convicted of lying to Congress, witness tampering and obstructing the House's investigation into the Trump campaign's connections to Russian Federation, saying the sentence constituted a "horrible and very unfair situation".

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to newshounds all the way through a gathering with President of the Republic of Ecuador Lenín Moreno, within the Oval Office on the White House, on February 12, 2020 in Washington, DC.

Republican lawmakers, who almost all voted to acquit Trump of impeachment charges, offered muted criticism of the president but shrugged off suggestions they should investigate whether his political concerns were influencing law enforcement.

Upset with the department's fresh recommendation, the four prosecutors handling the case withdrew on Wednesday, with one resigning from his position altogether.

Stone is still awaiting sentencing, and earlier this week, federal prosecutors recommended he serve seven to nine years in prison.

"The President has full faith and confidence in Attorney General Barr to do his job and uphold the law", White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said in a statement.

On Tuesday, the Department of Justice made a highly scrutinized decision to overrule the sentencing recommendation made by the federal prosecutors who successfully convicted Stone of all counts brought against him by Mueller's team.

Stone is a flamboyant political operative - a self-described "dirty trickster" - who was convicted previous year of lying to Congress, witness tampering and obstructing a congressional investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Bruce Rogow, Stone's lawyer, declined to comment.

Donald Trump is not just a President anymore - he is a ruler, empowered by a Congress whose members may be very fearless individually, but collectively, are Constitutional wimps.
