Flight CZ305 was one of three that arrived at Auckland Airport from mainland China on Monday afternoon and evening.

Of those, about 80 per cent were Hong Kong residents. Chinese and worldwide visitors will be able to self-quarantine at hotels or any other accommodation they have arranged.

"If they can not organize the accommodation, they will be taken to the temporary facilities prepared by the government", said the Secretary of Food and Health, Sophia Chan.

Global airlines Air France-KLM, Virgin and Iberia said Thursday they would extend their initial suspension of flights to China where authorities are struggling to contain a coronavirus outbreak.

Officials - backed by volunteers from the civil service and some students - will conduct spot checks or make daily phone calls to ensure people were staying at home. Violators could face six months in prison and a HK$25,000 (S$4,475) fine.

Tang said the airline would announce "further measures" to help it get through the situation in the days ahead, without providing further detail.

"The problem of supply shortage doesn't exist", Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung said. "The public need not worry", it said.

Cathay Pacific Airways CEO Augustus Tang's request in a video message comes as the airline has suspended more than 90 percent of its flights to China amid the outbreak, which has killed almost 500 people and sickened more than 24,000.

The carrier announced Tuesday afternoon that it is suspending flights to Hong Kong beginning February 8.

Last Friday, thousands of Hong Kong medical workers went on strike, urging the city's government to completely seal the border between mainland China and Hong Kong.
