He took Scout, who serves as his company's unofficial mascot, to the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. David MacNeil was so grateful to the hard-working vets at the university that he took out this Super Bowl ad to thank them and encourage donations to the school to help with its cancer research programs.

The seven-year-old golden retriever named Scout was featured as the star of WeatherTech's 2019 Super Bowl commercial which showcased their new line of pet-friendly products.

"Hi, I'm Scout and I'm a lucky dog", a voiceover says in the ad. "There's just absolutely no way, '" said MacNeil, the founder and CEO of WeatherTech, a vehicle accessories company.

Macneil said he'll be watching - with Scout by his side.

This year, however, MacNeil's $6 million time slot tells the story about how he nearly lost Scout to cancer. Vets said the much-loved pooch only had a one percent chance of survival.

According to a statement from the university, MacNeil had lost three previous dogs to cancer when an ultrasound found a tumor on Scout's heart last summer.

Thanks to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Scout immediately underwent chemotherapy and radiation, and his future started to a bit brighter.

Scout was diagnosed in July 2019 and by September his tumour decreased in size by 90 per cent.

"Scout's heart tumor has all but disappeared", the school said.

"Scout's illness devastated us", MacNeil told the school.

While tuned into the Super Bowl this Sunday, you might see an ad for veterinary research featuring a very, very good boy.

MacNeil is not only Scout's owner, but also the founder and CEO of auto accessory company, WeatherTech. Reuters reported that 30-second ads for the Super Bowl match between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs cost around $5.6 million.

"This is an awesome opportunity not only for the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the School of Veterinary Medicine, but for veterinary medicine worldwide", Markel told WMTV. We're thrilled to share with Super Bowl viewers how our profession benefits beloved animals like Scout and helps people, too'. "This research will help advance cancer treatments for humans as well", MacNeil said. The goals are to better diagnose, treat and prevent cancer and identify new drugs and treatments using the funding.
