The new virus behind the pneumonia outbreak in the Chinese city of Wuhan has a genetic makeup largely similar to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) virus, said a leading infectious disease expert in the city.

Among the 41 cases that have been confirmed so far, two persons have been discharged from hospital, seven are in critical condition, and one is reported dead. "The remaining patients were in stable condition", Wuhan health authorities said in a report.

A total of 739 close contacts, 419 of which are medical staff, have been placed under medical observation and no related cases were found, the commission said.

Treatments did not improve his symptoms after he was admitted to hospital and he died on the evening of January 9 when his heart failed.

More than 8,000 people were sickened between 2002 and 2003 during an outbreak of sudden acute respiratory syndrome in China and Hong Kong, killing almost 800 people and sparking a global health panic.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put out a health alert advising physicians who treat patients with pneumonia-like illness to consider a possible link to the Chinese outbreak and to wear masks and take other precautions in treating patients who recently travelled to Wuhan.

City residents anxious about the outbreak have rushed to buy face masks from local pharmacies, with many selling out earlier this week, while officials in Taiwan have urged the island's health and welfare ministry to strengthen quarantine controls. More than 8,000 people were sickened and almost 800 died, but no cases have been reported since 2004. They identified it as a coronavirus, a group that also includes SARS and MERS.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause infections ranging from the common cold to SARS.

On Saturday evening, there was little sign of alarm in Wuhan outside of the seafood market, which had been cordoned off.

The health authorities reiterated Saturday they had not seen any definite evidence of people passing on the virus to other people - meaning that every human case would have come from being exposed to the virus from an animal.
