Lebanon: Scores injured as riots break out in Beirut
21 January, 2020, 00:56
Worldwide coverage of the three-month old protests in Lebanon has picked up in the past two days as the violence worsened.
Sunday's confrontation escalated near parliament a day after more than 370 people were wounded in the biggest casualty toll since the protests began.
Security officers, who were injured in clashes with protesters, were attacked after being taken to hospitals, the country's interior ministry said in a statement. On Sunday, more than a 100 people were injured in downtown Beirut.
The Internal Security Forces said 142 police were injured.
Since then, the country's leaders have been dragging their feet on forming a new government.
Outgoing prime minister Saad Hariri, who stepped down on 29 October, urged political parties to "stop wasting time". More than 120 were treated in hospitals, including a protester with an eye injury, as well as members of the security forces. Workers also welded fencing together across roads leading to Parliament. The protesters also smashed bank windows, and there were reports on social media of stores being looted. The demonstrators widely blame financial institutions, alongside government corruption, for the crippling economic crisis.
Nearby soot and ashes still littered the ground where security forces burned the tents of the protesters' sit-in during the chaotic melee.
Anti-riot forces responded with water cannons, rubber bullets and tear gas, an AFP reporter said.
Protesters, with their faces covered, hurled stones, steel barriers and flower pots.
As rioting took place in central Beirut, thousands of other protesters arrived later from three different parts of the city to join the demonstration.
The pitched street battles lasted for almost nine hours, with both protesters and the government trading blame for the violence.

The strong-armed response by Lebanese security forces elicited worldwide condemnation.
Human Rights Watch denounced what it called "the brutal use of force unleashed by Lebanon's riot police against largely peaceful demonstrators".
As Lebanon sinks deeper into its worst economic crisis in decades, anger has boiled over at a ruling elite dominating the country since the 1975-1990 civil war.
"We will not pay the price", chanted some protestors, referencing the national debt, which now stands at $87 billion (€78 billion) or 150% of GDP. The Lebanese pound fell more than 60 percent against United States dollar over the period. The economy has seen no growth and flows of foreign currency dried up in the already heavily indebted country that relies on imports for most basic goods.
