During the Judiciary Committee hearing to debate the articles of impeachment against Trump, Republican Rep. Steve Chabot (pictured) said: "Mr. Chairman, the biggest difference in the Clinton impeachment and this one is that President Clinton committed a crime - perjury".

The House Judiciary Committee is expected to approve two articles of impeachment later on Thursday, setting up a vote by the Democratic-controlled House next week that is expected to make Mr Trump the third president in U.S. history to be impeached. Let the president's lawyers comment on the House case.

Zaino expressed opposition to the Democrats' impeachment efforts, although she said she was not fond of Trump.

Trump himself has lashed out online repeatedly at his Democratic rivals in recent days.

If the House impeaches Mr Trump, who is charged with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, he would then go on trial in the Senate.

It names nine officials who Trump directed not to comply with House subpoenas for testimony preventing investigators from obtaining a full picture of Trump's actions.

"We can look at the Biden affair outside of impeachment", said Graham.

What do the articles of impeachment say?

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and labelled the impeachment inquiry a "witch-hunt" and "sham".

Clinton faced two articles of impeachment for lying under oath and obstruction of justice, but was cleared and acquitted in the Senate in 1999 when the articles did not receive the necessary two-thirds majority vote from senators for conviction and removal from office.

"I would be totally surprised if there were 67 senators to remove the president", McConnell said in a weekly press conference, "That remains my view".

"This is the articles that we wrote after all of these hearings and all these grand pronouncements and all these thoughts of crimes in plain sight?" Democrat Eric Swalwell called it a "constitutional crime spree".

Two other Democratic leadership sources say they are not planning to whip their members on the floor vote on the articles, meaning they won't twist arms to keep Democrats in line.

Weinstein has pleaded not guilty to criminal charges that he sexually assaulted two women, one in 2006 and another in 2013. While the monitoring now appears to be working, Illuzzi said she thought that was because of the threat of new bail.

"I believe the president abused the power of his office, putting his own interest above the needs of our nation", McBath said.

American public opinion is split.

During his remarks Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Lithonia, said that before the investigation began he did not support impeaching Trump, but the facts revealed in the process have lead him to changed his stance.

"The American people deserve a process that puts politics aside", said Republican Representative Martha Roby who slammed Democrats for failing "to arrive at undisputed facts".

When the impeachment resolution comes to the floor, the House will take separate votes on each article of impeachment.

Democrats are not expecting mass defections and they expect to have more than enough votes for final passage.

McConnell, a close Trump ally, says no decision has been made over how to conduct the trial.

Debating the vote before a primetime national television audience, the partisan animosity between Republicans and Democrats at times appeared personal.

"Rules have just been thrown out the window in this process", said Republican US Representative Debbie Lesko. "They don't like the 63 million people who voted for this president, all of us in flyover country, all of us common folk in Ohio Wisconsin Tennessee and Texas".

How the trial might proceed remains to be seen.

Senate Republicans and the White House had been "going back and forth" over whether to call witnesses, a White House legislative aide told Al Jazeera after meeting privately with Republicans.

Collins argued that House Democrats are abusing their power and have been seeking to remove Trump from office since he was inaugurated.
