A 13-year-old boy was taken into custody after allegedly threatening a shooting at a Los Angeles County middle school, authorities said Friday. The school in question has not been named by sheriff's officials.
The sheriff of Los Angeles County says his detectives foiled what might have been a shooting massacre at a South Los Angeles school just over a week after a deadly school shooting in Santa Clarita. Villanueva said the Knight High School student made threats on social media after a fight on campus. "In this case, the fact that people took a step forward and said what ... they had heard led us to be able to prevent what would have been a tragedy today", he said.
The 13-year-old's alleged threats came to light when other students overheard him talking about gunning down his schoolmates, according to police. The rifle was not registered but did have a serial number, law enforcement officials said.
During their search, officers seized an AR-15 rifle - a weapon gunmen have used in many mass shootings - along with the high-capacity magazine and ammunition, according to Villanueva.
The student was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats. A 19-year-old male relative also was arrested on suspicion of possessing an unregistered firearm, Boese said. He was being held in lieu of $35,000 bail, but his name had not been released. The administrators contacted deputies immediately, he said. The sheriff said the boy acknowledged having posted threats along with photos of a teenager with a gun. No weapon was recovered in the case. While it's not clear who assembled it, police say the parts can be bought online or at gun shows without a background check and instructions can be found on YouTube, meaning 16-year-old Nathaniel Berhow could have easily put it together himself.
A series of threats have been reported at Los Angeles County schools since the November 14 shooting at Saugus High School, where a student fatally shot two students before killing himself. The sheriff said that despite conducting 45 interviews and conducting a search of Berhow's home, police had not yet determined a motive. Villanueva later clarified the weapon has a serial number.
