The Dutch gendarmerie is investigating a "suspicious situation" on board an aircraft at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

Schipol airport tweeted: "The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee is now investigating a situation on board of a plane at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol".

The plane, Air Europa flight UX1094, had at least 27 passengers on board when the alert was allegedly triggered.

Schiphol is one of Europe's busiest hubs, with over 54 million passengers passing through the airport from January through September this year, according to the latest figures.

Police and ambulances were earlier deployed near the aircraft, witnesses said.

He declined to name the airline involved or provide further details.

Air Europa noted in a followup tweet that its flight to Madrid would take off shortly.

The incident was described as a GRIP-3 situation, Dutch officials said, meaning an incident or serious event with major consequences to a local population.

Schipol airport tweeted: 'The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee is now investigating a situation on board of a plane at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

An arrest team was called to the scene, and the D concourse was partially evacuated, according to Nu.nl.
