"The side effects of these mental-health burdens will make people less likely to post their personal content, making the platform less active", Wong tweeted. In addition to Canada, the Facebook unit began hiding like counts among select users in Australia, Brazil, Japan, Ireland, Italy and New Zealand.

Australians will soon notice their Facebook news feed is missing something with like counts set to disappear.

Users will be blocked from viewing the number of likes, reactions and video views on other people's posts.

Engadget reports that just shortly after removing the like count from photos on its photo-sharing app Instagram, Facebook is considering removing "likes" across its platform entirely. On right, the same post as seen in Australia, where the company is testing a feature to hide "like" counts to the public. A 2016 UCLA study found that teenagers are heavily influenced by the number of "likes" on a post, and are more likely to engage with a post if many other people have already done so.

Garlick said that the initial response after hiding the "likes" on Instagram was quite positive but, for the time being, the companies are still "learning and listening to feedback at this stage". Facebook said it had not decided whether to roll out the experiment beyond Australia. That helped lead to a proliferation of violent, radical or otherwise extremist content on social media that set tongues wagging.

"We've had really positive feedback from a lot of the anti-bullying groups and mental health organisations that we work with, " Garlick said.

The Instagram move angered some influencers, who argued that likes are an important business metric for them.

However, the feature has proved controversial and earlier this month a survey for the Royal Society for Public Health found it was considered the most "toxic" feature of social media by United Kingdom users.
